Database Summaries
The Allied and Complementary Medicine Database (AMED) is a unique bibliographic database produced by the Health Care Information Service of the British Library. It covers a selection of journals in complementary medicine, palliative care, and several professions allied to medicine. The database covers the years from 1985 to present and is updated monthly. This database is supplied by Ovid.
The British Nursing Index (BNI) is a bibliographic database that indexes articles from the most popular English language nursing journals published primarily in the UK. BNI is a comprehensive index covering all aspects of nursing, midwifery and community healthcare from 1985 to the present, and is updated monthly. This database is supplied by ProQuest.
CINAHL is a comprehensive database for nurses and allied health professionals. It covers all aspects of nursing and the allied health disciplines from the period of 1981 onwards. In addition to international nursing journals, publications from the spheres of biomedicine, alternative therapy, health sciences, librarianship, health promotion/education, and consumer health are continually reviewed for relevant articles.
Emcare is a nursing and allied health bibliographic database published by Elsevier, indexing international journals from 1995 onwards. Subject coverage includes nursing, professional education, intensive/ critical care, community care, geriatrics and palliative care, anaesthesiology/ pain medicine, psychology, complementary medicine, dermatology and wound care, healthcare management, medical technology, nutrition and dietetics, obstetrics and gynaecology, oncology, paediatrics, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, and public and occupational health.
The Health Management Information Consortium (HMIC) database is a compilation of data from two sources; the King's Fund and the Department of Health and Social Care.
The DHSC database encompasses health and social care management information from 1919 onwards. Coverage includes official publications, journal articles and grey literature on: health service policy, management and administration, with an emphasis on the British National Health Service; the quality of health services including hospitals, nursing, primary care and public health; the design and maintenance of health service buildings; occupational health; regulation of medicines and equipment; and social services.
The King's Fund database contains records from 1979 onwards, mostly with a UK focus, on health management and services, social care, service development, and NHS organisation and administration. Records include books, pamphlets, government reports, abstracts of journal articles, and a wide range of grey literature.
Medline is a general medical database produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. The database contains citations derived from biomedical and life science journals from 1946 onwards. Broadly, the subject areas covered are allied health specialties, dentistry, nursing, medicine, pre-clinical and veterinary sciences. It contains a broad range of medical topics relating to research, clinical practice, administration, policy issues, and health care services.
PsycINFO provides access to international literature in psychology and related disciplines, 1806 to present. In addition to high quality psychological content, the database is enriched with literature from an array of related disciplines, including psychiatry, education, business, medicine, nursing, pharmacology, law, linguistics, and social work. Nearly all records contain non-evaluative summaries, and all records from 1967 to the present are indexed using the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms. The sources include professional journals, chapters, books, reports, theses and dissertations, published internationally.
