A band of brothers

I was asked early on to be part of the COVID team. I was happy to do this despite being deemed medium / high risk myself.

I have no regrets in doing this – in the twilight of my career I found myself learning anew and being able to bring to bear experience of working with the last epidemic which was HIV in 1984 and on.

The morale, team working and the absolute willingness of the group as a whole to expose themselves to danger, especially at a time when we were still in the dark as to exactly what we going on, was a privilege and an honour to be part of.

To misquote Shakespeare’s Henry V:

And gentlefolk in England now-a-bed shall think themselves accursed they were not there, and hold their manhood’s cheap whiles any speaks that worked with us upon the Covid ward.

A bit overblown but it encapsulates how we felt. “We band of brothers….”
