Mend the Living by Maylis de Kerangal, translated from the French by Jessica Moore, is the winner of the 2017 Wellcome Book Prize. After a young surfer’s death, the novel explores organ transplantation from the point of view of his parents and the health professionals involved.  The Independent’s reviewer described it as ‘a novel that goes to the heart of what it means to be a human being‘ while the Guardian called De Kerangal ‘as implacable as circumstance‘.
