Our libraries

There are three multi-professional libraries in Brighton, Hove and Haywards Heath with a superb range of resources covering a wide range of health-related topics. The staff in the libraries are extremely knowledgeable and will help you access material which, if not available on site, may be obtained through the system of inter-library loans and literature searches.

Full details of the library opening times and services are can be found on the library’s website.

Resources and services

The libraries hold a diverse range of books, journals, DVDs, teaching models and reports on issues relating to health care, professional development, management and NHS policy.

Private Members may borrow items from all three BSUH libraries, excluding “Reference Only” items. The loan period is for four weeks but items may be renewed via telephone or email unless requested by another user. Items in high demand may only be borrowed for seven days.

A library membership ticket and PIN will be provided for logging onto the online catalogue for reserving and renewing items on loan.

Items may be requested from other NHS libraries through the Inter-Library service. If a requested item is only available from an organisation that charges, for example the British Library, the charge will be passed on to the member.

Private members can also access reliable health information websites through the library website such as the National Institute for Health Care Excellence Evidence Search, the Cochrane Library and PubMed.

However please note: private membership does NOT provide access to health databases, online journals and books which are restricted to NHS staff.

Photocopying is charged. Current prices can be found on the Use the library facilities page. A blank, re-chargeable photocopy card may be purchased from the library staff for £1.30 to be used at the Audrey Emerton and Princess Royal Hospital libraries.

Photocopies can be made at the Mill View library with payment given direct to the library staff there.

Expert guidance and advice

The library staff can provide guidance on accessing quality health information and can carry out literature searches on a wide range of health-related topics. Literature search requests may be made at the discretion of the Library and Knowledge Service. Every effort will be made to meet deadlines but private members should be aware that priority is always given to searches for NHS patient care.

Current awareness service

Contents pages of selected journals may be provided to private members via email. Please contact library staff for details.

Registration is at the discretion of the Library and Knowledge Service.

Applications to register for private membership should be made to any of the three libraries. Current ID with a photograph and proof of address is necessary.

Please allow fifteen minutes for paperwork and a tour of the library’s facilities.

Payment can be made by cash or cheque to “Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust”. We regret credit cards are not accepted.

Please contact the Head of Library Services for Institutional Membership rates.
