Farewell and thanks Iain

This month we bid a fond farewell to Iain O’Neill, our Senior Learning Technologist for University Hospitals Sussex. Iain joined the team in early 2019 and has been the driving force behind our learning technology service and the iris learning management system in the years since.

Iain has supported educators and educational administrators all across the Trust to move their teaching to an online or blended approach. He has given educators the skills and confidence to create their own online content, overseen the creation of content by the learning technology team, and made numerous improvements to the working of iris. The learning management system is now more accessible than ever, and the management of teaching and training is more streamlined.

When the COVID-19 pandemic emerged last year the need to shift to online teaching intensified rapidly, with a tripling of the monthly requests for learning technology support.  Iain led the team through this change calmly and effectively, supporting the education centres to upgrade their equipment for livecast teaching, supporting staff to teach using MS Teams, and managing a major upgrade of the iris system.

Iain’s collaborative approach and amazing technical wizardry will be missed by the Trust, but he won’t be going too far afield. Iain has been appointed as a learning technology relationship manager for Health Education England, supporting NHS trusts across the South, and so we look forward to working with him in his new role.

We are in the process of recruiting Iain’s replacement and hope to make an announcement later this month.
