Farewell and thanks Lisa, our Medical School Librarian

As you know, we said a sad goodbye to Lisa McLaren who left her role as Brighton & Sussex Medical School Librarian in October.

Lisa moved to a new role just up the road at the University of Sussex. She’s settled in nicely there and sent us all an update:

“Hi everyone, I bet you all thought you’d seen the back of me! I’m enjoying life up at Sussex and I am now sharing an office with former iris stalwart, Matthew Taylor (who says hello).

“My new job is Academic Support Manager, so I look after the Learning and Teaching Team, Reading Lists and Research Support – including open access and the REF, a research funding exercise that determines which universities get funding and is a very competitive and life zapping process.  My two favourite things about my new job: there is always homemade cake to be found in the office (don’t tell Matt Day, he will defect) and I’m mostly in the same building most of the time, so there is a lot less running around than before, although my Fitbit is suffering for it.

“But I am also missing the BSMS role and being down at the AEB. I still see Katie and Annemarie from time to time, which is really nice and they keep me in the loop with all the gossip. It sounds like the new BSMS librarian is going to be great though and I’m glad you’ve got someone nice coming in. I hope the students are behaving themselves.

“You will all be pleased to know that Sussex don’t operate a key system and use a Salto card, which I keep in my phone wallet, so I have not lost my keys once since starting at Sussex. Apart from when I mysteriously lost my house and car key and had to phone an emergency auto locksmith out just before Christmas. Sadly, this time they didn’t turn up in my back pocket. I also had a near miss with a bus on my scooter – totally the bus driver’s fault…”

We wish Lisa all the very best; it’s good to know she’s still in local academia, with or without her keys!

Hot off the press: New Medical School Librarian!

Recruitment to this challenging role (and hard act to follow) has of course taken time, but we’re pleased to announce we’ve found a worthy replacement.

Steve Bowman is currently the Learning and Teaching Librarian at London South Bank University. He was previously the Deputy Librarian at the University of Chichester where he was responsible for implementation of e-learning across the institution.

Steve will be joining us on 20th April and will split his time between Falmer and the RSCH Library.

More to follow when Steve is in post!
