16th December: The BSMS TEL Team

The BSMS Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Team supports all those who teach for the School in the effective use of digital tools for learning. This includes full-time academics at both partner universities and a far larger number of healthcare workers across all the region in primary, secondary, and community settings. The BSMS TEL Team consists of:

Steve Bowman, BSMS Librarian and TEL Lead joined in April 2020 (post lockdown) and so has been 2D for most of this time. Previously Deputy Librarian and HSC Liaison at London South Bank University, he has a background in Allied Health and Higher Education. He has a long-term interest in the application of technologies in Teaching and Learning. His interests include book collecting, the history of film and cinema, cooking, and his amazing family!

Tim Vincent, Senior Learning Technologist comes from a medical sciences and education background. He has been in this post for 14 years and has seen the School grow from its first cohort of graduates. His particular area of focus in the team includes managing the CAPSULE, SmartDrug and ePortfolio projects and supporting the postgraduate taught courses. He enjoys opportunities to do teaching and video production, having a misspent youth videoing pyrotechnics. He also loves his cat Tabitha, and all animals really!

Learning Technologists

CJ Taylor comes from a nursing and digital creative background and has been at the School for seven years. Her particular area of focus in the team is on the bespoke web and app development projects including the Anatomy iPad interface and 360-degree video production, as well as supporting the first two years of the undergraduate course. She enjoys web code, photography, films, pub quizzes and growing her own veg.

Nicola Walters comes from a media production and teaching background and was part of the BSUH TEL Team before coming to BSMS so she is expertly placed to support much of the clinical teaching faculty for the medical school. Her areas of work are highly varied – creating support documentation, delivering training, video production, and bespoke elearning projects. She enjoys piano, music production, cooking, board games!

Their work can be categorised into three broad areas:

  • Training and development in core digital skills
  • Promoting the use of digital tools for effective & engaging teaching
  • Creating and supporting bespoke digital learning resources

They also work closely with learning technology colleagues from the University of Brighton as well as with those from the University of Sussex and the BSUH TEL Team (look out for their separate introduction).

The COVID-19 lockdown measures since March suddenly brought the need for digital skills to the fore! Teaching live online sessions, recording lecture presentations, and adopting good practice in digital accessibility is now crucial for course teams and educators.

So the BSMS TEL team are looking forward to a break from all things digital this Christmas!
