This week marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the NHS. There will be a lot of national coverage of this momentous occasion and, here at Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals Trust, we’re marking in it our own special way!
Every day this week, there are a number of special events popping up across the Trust for staff and patients to get into the 70th Birthday celebration spirit!
Today, colleagues throughout the hospitals looked back at 70 years of the NHS with a special talk from BSUH’s Heritage Officer, Samantha Sharman, in which she shared a snapshot introduction into the establishment and development of the NHS through the eyes of the Royal Sussex County Hospital, and East Sussex’s local health history.
Samantha explained our transition from Voluntary Hospital to NHS Hospital, against the background of the challenges and changes felt by the NHS in the last 70 years. She also introduced us to rich social history generated by its staff, volunteers, students and supporters. Through Samantha’s talk, it’s clear how much patient care has changed throughout the years.
If you’re interested in learning more about the history of the Hospital, a public exhibition will be held onsite next year prior to the Barry Building being decommissioned.
