Brighton ceramic artist Marion Brandis has been appointed to work with the BDP Landscape team to develop art proposals for the roof gardens as a whole. She is an experienced public artist who enjoys using ceramics in landscape settings.
In the past the hospital’s congested site meant that it was unable to offer special external spaces for patients, visitors and staff.
The size of the new hospital buildings offers extraordinary possibilities for the gardens situated on the rooftop and Marion is working with the BDP Landscape team to create artwork proposals which make the most of the location.
The commission aims to create a therapeutic, restful and welcoming environment for patients, their families, visitors and the staff team. The gardens will provide a space for relaxation, distraction and sensory stimulus, and will also aim to meet the specific needs of different patient groups (e.g. children, older adults etc).
Marion is proposing artworks across five of the roof gardens. Early ideas in discussion include ceramic focal points, feature planters and a series of round ceramic tiles printed with images of Brighton and Sussex.
The proposals will be reviewed and amended as the build progresses and the landscape designs are finalised.
