CONNECT is being delivered by arts consultants Willis Newson in partnership with Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and the Trust’s ongoing arts programme Onward Arts, architects BDP and construction partner Laing O’Rourke.
The CONNECT team is working closely with partners and stakeholders across the city and county including Brighton and Hove City Council, Brighton University, Photoworks and a range of local artists.
BSUH
Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals is the regional teaching hospital for Sussex working across two sites: the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.
The Brighton campus includes the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and the Sussex Eye Hospital, and the Haywards Heath campus includes the Hurstwood Park Regional Centre for Neurosciences.
It provides District General Hospital services to its local populations in and around the City of Brighton and Hove, Mid Sussex and the western part of East Sussex and more specialised and tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the south east of England.
Onward Arts
Onward Arts is the ongoing arts programme for Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals. Through the use of the arts, they seek to improve the experience of patients, visitors and staff and create a healing hospital environment for all.
Passionate about arts in health, they advocate the value of integrating the arts into the culture of the Trust and deliver high quality, patient-centred, arts projects in partnership with the communities the hospital serves.
Willis Newson
Willis Newson is one of the UK’s leading arts and health agencies. They use art to create positive, welcoming and engaging health & social care environments. Willis Newson manage projects from conception to installation, integrating art into the design of large capital developments as well as smaller refurbishment projects in hospitals, care homes and health centres.
They have particular expertise in the field of public art commissioning, along with experience of using art to create caring environments for; children and young people, older patients, cancer care, mental health, residential dementia care and more.
Laing O’Rourke
Laing O’Rourke is a privately owned, internationally focussed engineering enterprise with world-class capabilities spanning the entire client value chain.

Brighton & Hove City Council
Brighton and Hove City Council is the local authority of the city of Brighton and Hove with the powers of a non-metropolitan county and district council combined. It provides a full range of local government services including Council Tax billing, libraries, social services, processing planning applications, waste collection and disposal, and it is a local education authority.
Photoworks
Photoworks is a national development agency for photography. Photoworks’ programme includes commissions, new writing, participation and exceptional projects including the national Jerwood/Photoworks Awards, Photoworks Annual and Brighton Photo Biennial.
Photoworks aim is to connect outstanding artists with audiences and to champion talent and ambition.
University of Brighton
A part of Brighton since 1859, the university is a diverse, multidisciplinary institution with 20,700 students studying across five campuses in Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings.
