Taking the theme of ‘Brighton’, Celine Marchbank has created a portfolio that evokes and celebrates the sense of place that home brings. In a series of diverse, individual, and intimate portraits of people’s homes across Brighton and Hove, she captures a sense of familiarity, wellbeing and comfort.
Photographer Celine Marchbank explains her approach to creating the Town Portfolio for the new hospital waiting rooms in this 5 minute film by Vasil Dzhagalov.
Celine engaged with many local hospital users and Brighton and Hove residents: patients, ex-patients, staff, volunteers, carers, visitors and family members. Allowing Celine access to their photograph homes and sharing their experiences and personal stories, the resulting images are sensitive portraits of people and place.

“Showing the work back to people who have been involved in the project has really sparked off conversations. I have been sat in a group and had a ten-minute conversation about net curtains: the curtains they have in their house, what curtains their grandparents had in theirs.. Snippets of people’s lives come out when they sit and talk about or view a picture – and to me that’s what the work is about and that’s what I’m hoping will happen in these waiting rooms”.
