Photographers talk about creating work for the 36 Waiting Rooms in the new hospital in 4 new short films

Visit stunning locations across Sussex, and see them through the eyes of leading photographers in these 4 new short films by filmmaker Vasil Dzhagalov. The films, featuring Helen Sear, Murray BallardZoe Childerley, and Celine Marchbank tell the stories of how each photographer approached the Photography Waiting Rooms  Commission for the new Royal Sussex County Hospital.

Appointed during 2017 and 2018, each photographer spent almost two years visiting locations across the county and working with local communities to develop collections of images to enliven the waiting rooms and contribute to patient wellbeing.

They have created 4 portfolios of work featuring 108 images in response to the themes Sussex, South Downs, Town and Coast. The new work will be on permanent display in the new hospital waiting rooms. Capturing the spirit of place, the images will connect patients to their local environment, creating welcoming and reassuring waiting spaces which reflect the culture and identity of the hospital community.

These new films follow the artists on location as they talk about how they created the work for the hospital and how they hope it will be a source of contemplation and pleasure for patients, visitors and staff during times of potential stress.
