Detail of mosaic sample; part of a larger design for a mosaic band inlay in a large-scale planter in the Rheumatology Courtyard on L1.

Designs by Sussex-based artist Marion Brandis featuring seagulls, fishing buoys and the Kemptown seafront were approved recently. These colourful sculptural works will be sited across courtyards and roof terraces of the new hospital.

The largest of the works will be a 20m long mosaic panel inset into a large planter in the Rheumatology Courtyard on Level 1. This panoramic mosaic – the length of a cricket pitch! – will feature ocean details and architectural features from the Kemptown seafront.

Made from mosaic and painted jesmonite, the works will bring a hand-made, tactile, sensory quality to these outdoor spaces, creating focal points and conversation starters for patients and visitors.

Small-scale maquettes for larger jesmonite gulls which will animate the Therapy Gardens on Levels 4 and 10..   Designs for mosaic sphere
