Young patients and their parents have highly praised the paediatric diabetes service at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals.

A survey into the experience of children and young people with diabetes has rated the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital as better than the national average in almost every area.

The survey, reported by the National Paediatric Diabetes Audit (NPDA), surveyed 13,000 families using 170 paediatric diabetes units around the country to ensure clinics were providing the best possible care for patients.

BSUH were rated as better than the average for other Trusts across England and Wales in 20 of the 24 questions asked and better than the average for the rest of the South East in 21 questions. A total of 84% of those who took part in the questionnaire gave the service nine or ten out of ten when asked whether they would recommend the clinic to a friend or family member with a child who has diabetes.

Dr Ryan Watkins, Consultant Neonatologist and Deputy Chief of Women and Children and Deputy Chief of Safety in Children, said: “We are delighted the young patients and their parents are satisfied with the service we are providing and we will continue to strive to make sure we keep up our high standards. This is a fantastic achievement for whole diabetes team and is testament to all their hard work.”

Some of questions the survey asked young people using the service and their parents included how quickly they were seen in clinic, whether they felt they were given time to discuss concerns, access to information and advice, and whether they received enough information about different aspects of their condition.

Some of the comments from the survey about the service at BSUH said:

“The service we have received for our child with diabetes type 1 in this hospital has been overwhelmingly excellent. We cannot fault it in any way, thanks to all concerned.”

“The advice and support given by our team has been invaluable. I cannot express enough our satisfaction with the service.”

“We have always been treated very professionally by all staff. The team will always be part of our family and we can't thank them enough for all they have done for us over the years. A very special team of people.”
