Your stay in hospital

Clinical teams

Your admission letter will tell you where to go and when you should arrive at the hospital, but if you are in any doubt please go to the reception desk at the main entrance and ask for directions.

Volunteer guides may be available to escort you to where you want to go.

Visit the Our hospitals page for more details about finding your way to hospital.

Staff on the ward

When you reach the ward you will be welcomed by a member of the nursing staff or the Ward Clerk who will tell you about the ward and its daily routine.

On the ward you will see many different members of staff. If you are not sure who they are, please ask them to explain. All staff members should be wearing name badges with our logo on them. If you cannot see the badge, you can ask them to show it to you.

Your doctor

The person in charge of your medical care is called the consultant. Along with other doctors who may visit you, the consultant will discuss your condition and offer you the best available treatment options.

Your nurse

You will have a nurse who is responsible for your nursing care on each shift. They will introduce themselves to you and will also have help from other nurses while caring for you.

Ward sister or charge nurse

The ward sister (female) or charge nurse (male) manages the whole ward. You can ask to see them if you have any concerns.

Senior nurses

Senior nurses (the modern version of the matron) are in charge of a group of wards and can deal with a problem if the ward staff cannot. If you would like to speak with the senior nurse, please ask the ward staff.

Ward housekeeper

Your ward housekeeper is in charge of making sure your ward is clean. If you have any worries about this, you can speak to the ward housekeeper.

You may also see other members of the ward team who will help deliver your care.
