Treatment out of hospital

The following advice is in line with Government guidelines designed to help reduce the spread of flu to patients and NHS staff.

If you have flu-like symptoms please don’t come into the hospital. Please return home and do one of the following:

  • Contact the National Pandemic Flu Service on 0800 1 513 513 or at www.direct.gov.uk/pandemicflu to check your symptoms and get access to antiviral medicine if necessary

  • Call your GP rather than use the National Pandemic Flu Service if -

    • you have a serious underlying illness

    • you are pregnant

    • you have a sick child under one year old

    • your condition suddenly gets much worse

    • your condition is still getting worse after 7 days (5 for a child)

Please only come into the hospital if you are seriously ill and in need of emergency care.

We can all help to prevent the transmission of all viruses by taking the following steps:

  • Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue when possible

  • Dispose of dirty tissues promptly and carefully

  • Maintain good basic hygiene, for example, washing your hands frequently with soap and water

  • Clean hard surfaces (e.g. door handles) frequently using a normal cleaning product
