About the unit
The Sussex Kidney Unit is the main tertiary provider of renal services for East and West Sussex, with a catchment population of approximately 1.2 million.
The main unit in Brighton has 36 in-patient beds, and 41 haemodialysis stations.
The unit provides clinics in general nephrology, low clearance and renal vasculitis, as well as transplant and dialysis clinics. A secondary care hypertension clinic is also provided for the local population.
Research and special expertise
The Renal Unit is involved in a number of ongoing exciting and innovative projects.
The unit has major research interests in tuberous sclerosis complex, vascular stiffness and oxidant stress, peritoneal dialysis technologies, myeloma and chronic disease management stretegies.
Collaborative research is conducted locally with the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, Sussex University and Brighton University. The unit is also involved in a number of multi-centre studies.
