Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals (BSUH) staff and patients are the stars of a new poster campaign designed to remind staff and hospital visitors of the importance of good hand hygiene.
The message behind the new posters and displays, which feature specially-photographed portraits of individual patients, nurses and doctors, is that the whole hospital is an infection control ‘zone’ and that everyone should clean their hands when they are ‘in the zone’.
The eye-catching blue and yellow visuals have been installed in hospital reception areas, waiting rooms and wards entrances at all BSUH sites, including Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath, the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, the Sussex Eye Hospital and Hurstwood Park Regional Centre For Neurosciences.
The next phase of the new infection control campaign, planned for early next year, will be the introduction of ‘in the zone’ posters beside patient beds to remind staff, patients and visitors of the importance of good hand hygiene before and after patient contact.
“Good hand hygiene is the most effective measure we can all take to prevent infections in our hospitals. The prevention and control of infection on our wards is our highest priority,” says BSUH Chief Executive Duncan Selbie.
During 2009 BSUH hospitals passed two independent hygiene spot-checks as ‘best in class’, placing them in the top 20% of hospitals in England, as well as winning a national award as the most improved hospital for infection control in the south east. The new ‘In the Zone’ poster campaign has been designed to encourage staff and visitors to maintain high standards and to continue to build on this success.
