Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals (BSUH), which runs the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath, has one of the best patient safety records in England according to an independent survey of NHS hospitals published today.
BSUH was ranked joint 6th, or in the top 5% of the country’s 146 hospitals. The score is based on performance against 13 patient safety measures including overall death rate, as well as the death rates for stroke and heart attack patients, patients admitted with a broken hip and patients admitted for a low-risk procedure; how well the hospital does on infection control; the ratio of hospital staff to beds and its commitment to patient safety.
The information is published by Dr Foster, the UK’s leading independent provider of health information, in their annual Hospital Guide which is designed to give patients information about the standards which matter to them in a way that is easy to access and understand.
BSUH Chief Executive Duncan Selbie said:
“To be ranked in the top 5% of NHS hospitals in the country for patient safety is an achievement which every single person who works across our hospitals should be extremely proud of. It is an important indicator for our patients of the consistently high quality of clinical treatment and the outcomes we are achieving.
“We are never complacent though, and very clear that clinical outcomes are only ever part of what matters. What matters as much is the quality of the care we provide and that our patients feel they have been treated with kindness and compassion. When I talk to patients and their families they often mention the skill and expertise involved in their treatment, but they always talk about the presence or absence of kindness and compassion shown by the staff involved in their care. To be the best hospital we need to address both equally well.”
