Why is BSUH on Facebook and Twitter?
Millions of people use Facebook every day to keep up with groups and organisations, share links and information, show support and make comments. Unlike our other hospital communications channels it can be updated in real-time, accessed from anywhere at any time and enables instant two-way communication.
It is in no way intended to replace existing communication channels for staff (info-mails, info-net etc) during the working day. In fact our IT policy states: “Users cannot make excessive personal use: excessive use would include accessing the internet so frequently and for long periods so that it affects you ability to meet your contractual obligations to the Trust.”
Through Facebook we can also engage with and contact users who are making comments about us, get feedback on the services we provide and spread the word about the good work we’re doing – and not just to the people who actively sign up as our friends, but to their Facebook friends as well. After just two weeks over 10,000 people have been linked to our Facebook page.
As with our web sites, content is key and we will be feeding regular, interesting content into our Facebook and Twitter pages. These sites offer us a free and quick way to get messages out to the patients, public and staff about important things going on at BSUH and for them to tell us what they think. People increasingly expect information about the services they use to come to them, rather than having to seek it out. Facebook is ideal for telling people about:
-
good news stories
-
service disruptions, e.g. caused by bad weather
-
hospital redevelopment
-
infection control
-
major incidents, e.g. Facebook would have been an excellent way to issue updates about the heavy snow last year
-
new services and departments
-
initiatives and projects
-
health campaigns

Why?
Twitter is even more instant and allows people to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question – what are you doing? Many of our messages on Twitter are retweeted by other organisations meaning that we can get messages out very quickly and very widely.
