The League was established in 1956 as the Friends of Cuckfield Hospital, which was then the General Hospital for Mid-Sussex. In June 1991 services were transferred from Cuckfield to the new Mid-Sussex General Hospital. The new hospital was officially opened in September 1991 by HRH Princess Anne and it then became the Princess Royal Hospital. Consequently our organisation became the League of Friends of the Princess Royal Hospital, with a revised constitution, incorporating the previously separate Leagues supporting St Francis and Haywards Heath hospitals.
Objectives and activities
The overriding objectives of the League as set out in the constitution are:
-
To supplement the services of the hospital for the health, welfare and comfort of the patients by the provision of facilities, buildings and equipment which may be required for the treatment of the patients, or, for the running of the hospital and
-
To provide, or assist in the provision of, amenities in the hospital for patients and staff, including the provision and operation of hospital shops.
On 30 November 2005 a new Coffee Shop was opened by our President, Dame Vera Lynn, DBE. It offers longer open hours in the foyer with access to the internal garden, and sells hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, sweets and cakes. There is now an awning over the terrace, to allow more space, and fresh air with protection from the elements.
In the financial year to 31 March 2011 the League of Friends funded equipment to the value of £147,000 and by February 2012 has already agreed to commit a further £120,000, including the development of a Bereavement Room in the Maternity Department, a Sleep Apnoea suite, and a selection of technical equipment across the hospital. Over the past 50 plus years, many volunteers have given their time and energy to raise funds for the benefit of patients and staff. Since the Princess Royal Hospital was opened the League has raised well over £2million to support the work of the hospital.
The Coffee Shop provides funds throughout the year, but we are also grateful for special activities, such as our annual Golf Day, Darts Evening, and Tea Dance. We are always looking for new ways to raise funds. This April one of the PRH physiotherapists is running the London Marathon for sponsorship to the League. We also receive gifts in the form of regular and one-off donations, and legacies. If you want to support, ask at the League of Friends Coffee Shop in the PRH main entrance.
